Use the hand pump to apply about 1 bar of pressure to the cooling system. Now watch the pressure gauge. The pressure must remain constant for at least one minute. If the pressure drops, the system has a leak.
If cooling water does not seem to be leaking anywhere, check the cylinder head gasket.
(Hairline cracks in the cylinder head or engine block can be detected with the cooling water test 488975).
