For a long time, main headlamps were equipped with just a simple bulb with a single filament, before there were bulbs with another filament that provided more light.
The shape of the diffusing lenses further improved the luminous efficacy, but another breakthrough came when additional reflectors were used in the lamps to bundle the light and thus provide the first targeted illumination of the roadway.
Lucas relied here on the three-legged holder inside the headlamp, which is the name given to the Tripod headlamps and which carries the reflector cone at a suitable distance and angle to the bulb, thus providing unusually strong light with a clearly defined bright/dark boundary at the same time.
