Development
There was a lot of thought in the Rover house to transfer the solid construction of the Land Rover to a "Road Rover". The result was presented in 1970 in the form of the Range Rover: a solid and powerful off-road vehicle with a ladder frame, which cut a good figure both off-road and in front of the golf club. The basically two-door Range Rover was luxuriously equipped and sufficiently powered with a 3.5 ltr V8 engine.
This concept, which proved to be resilient and reliable, was retained until the last series in 1993 with the Range Rover LSE model. A little later, the four-door and automatic version of the LSE was the crowning glory of the Classic range: it had 20 centimetres more wheelbase, a 4.2 litre engine and air suspension.
At that time, the concept of the SUV did not yet exist. The Range Rover is not the first SUV either. However, the success of the Range Rover and its Asian market companions paved the way for the development of today's SUVs. With one big difference: the Range Rover is fully off-road compatible.
Panoramic feeling with the Range Rover Classic
The Range Rover Classic is just as wide as it is high with 1.78 m and, with its rows of windows and high seating position, offers an all-round view as if in a panoramic glass tower. The spacious interior with its wide centre console allows lots of room for both driver and passenger and gives the impression of comfort at the latest when you sink into the soft seats and roll through the urban streets as if on a throne.
Even on rough terrain, it quickly becomes clear that you are in the right vehicle. In the Range Rover Classic, you can easily master any terrain. The vehicle with its superior engine rolls over fields and meadows, crosses muddy swamps, rough surfaces and steep slopes.
Engine
The powerful V8 engine of the Range Rover Classic is the further development of a project abandoned by GM. The 3.5 ltr light alloy engine with wet cylinder liners was thermally stabilised and made rev-proof. For the Range Rover it was coupled with a four-speed gearbox. From 1985, the engine received optional intake manifold injection, later the displacement was increased from 3.5 litres to 3.9 litres.
In general, the engines of the Range Rover Classic always have sufficient power, but are anything but economical in terms of fuel consumption during demanding driving.
