The Silver Shadow - beacon of technical progress
Connoisseurs know that the Silver Shadow is something very special: Like the Bentley T, the model impressed as a saloon when it was unveiled in Paris in 1965, above all because of its progressiveness. It was also the most forward-looking model in 50 years - in terms of both technology and bodywork. It is not surprising, that the Silver Shadow formed the basis for the Rolls Royce Corniche and Rolls Royce Camargue, which was adopted by the Silver Shadow's platform and technology almost in their entirety.
Models
The models convinced naturally also fastidious customers and were therefore produced for 15 years. They were built as a further development of the Silver Shadow II and the Bentley T2 from 1977. Thus they were the most built Rolls Royce model at all. During the building period the Silver Shadow and Bentley-T went through transformations to different model variants - among them an elegant cabriolet and in 1966 a coupé. The open style was simply called the "Drophead Coupé" and was significantly more expensive than the saloon version.
The Bentley differs from the Silver Shadow only by minor details. In this case by the radiator grille, the hubcaps and of course the emblems. The advanced technology of the models included elements of the Rolls Royce Rangoon designed earlier by John Blatchley, namely a self-supporting body, a built-in level control, independent suspension and disc brakes.
- The Silver Shadow II featured a new grille look and internally adjustable and significantly larger exterior mirrors after the 1977 model update.
- The Bentley T2, on the other hand, could boast new instrumentation, new rack-and-pinion steering, disc brakes and more effective air conditioning.
- Added to this was independent suspension on all four wheels and, as with the Silver Shadow, automatic ride height control.
In 1980, the Silver Shadow was replaced by its successor, the Silver Spirit.
Engine performance and interior equipment
The first models, with an 8-cylinder V-engine with 6230 cm3 displacement and 131 kW output provided a first-class driving experience. From 1970, this was replaced by a larger one with 6750 cm³, whose power allowed acceleration of 11.0 sec. to 100 km/h with a top speed of 190 km/h.
Despite the relatively small stature of the Silver Shadow, the interior is quite spacious. The reason for this is the self-supporting body. The trunk also offers sufficient storage space.
Upon entering, the driver is greeted by comfortable leather seats in the style of British club chairs. In combination with dark wood on the dashboard, the glamorous gentleman's room feeling is thoroughly justified. When driving, one can lean back into the comfortable seats and enjoy the smooth driving style of the Rolls Royce Silver Shadow.
